8 tips against constipation during pregnancy

As if it is not enough that you will 'grow' a lot during your pregnancy. In addition to your growing uterus and baby, and the retention of fluid, you can also feel extra bloated because you suffer from constipation. Constipation during your pregnancy is caused by pregnancy hormones, less physical exercise and oppression of your intestines.

Constipation and hemorrhoids?

An additional pregnancy disorder in case of constipation or constipation are hemorrhoids. These can even be caused by constipation. Other causes are the higher pressure in the abdomen and hormonal changes. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins that are at the end of your rectum. Is constipation dangerous during pregnancy?

First, we want to answer the question of whether constipation can be dangerous. In the first instance, the answer to this is 'no'. We assume that this is a temporary difficult bowel movement and that you do not suffer from it chronically. It is expected to last for several days to weeks and then drops again. Only when you continue to suffer from it permanently can it become dangerous in the long run. But do not worry, it is very rare that this occurs.

Our tips against constipation during pregnancy

  1. Eat a lot of fiber!

    Fibers stimulate your bowel function and are essential in your diet. That does not only apply during your pregnancy. Fibers are found in vegetables, fruit and whole grain products such as wholegrain pasta, couscous, quinoa and bread. In addition, fibers are also found in Brinta, legumes (such as kidney beans, lentils, white beans), nuts and oatmeal.

  2. Drink enough fluid

    On average, women need between 1.5 and 2 liters of fluid per day. By moisture we mean: water, coffee (1 to a maximum of 2 cups a day), tea, milk or other dairy drinks (in moderation) and perhaps sometimes a fresh fruit juice.

  3. Keep moving

    Try to keep moving as much as possible during your pregnancy. Even if you feel anything but energetic, a good walk can really bring many benefits. Half a day a day moderate intensive exercise (your heart rate is clearly increased, but you can still talk) is already a good start. If you have become too big for a walk at a given moment, try swimming. You can do this until your last weeks of pregnancy.

  4. Divide your food throughout the day

    You can correct constipation by properly distributing your meals throughout the day. This ensures that your intestines stay in motion. For example, choose 3 main meals and 2 snacks. Or eat 6 smaller meals throughout the day. In addition, make sure that you get fiber with every meal, for example, by eating fruit, vegetables, wholemeal bread or legumes.

  5. Avoid eating fat

    Eating fat like fries or a bag of chips is not conducive to your bowel function. Of course you should treat yourself once, but if you suffer from constipation, you should avoid eating it. Choose instead for fresh products with a lot of fiber. Eventually you will feel much better with it and it contains much more nutrients for you and your baby!

  6. Stuff white bread, white pasta and gingerbread!

    These products have an adverse effect on your intestines and clog rather than ensure that you can go to the bathroom. Try to avoid it as much as possible!

  7. Strength? Go to the toilet!

    You have the urge to go to the toilet, do not ignore it and immediately look for the small room. Even if you are in town or in company: go to the toilet! If you wait too long, the stool will re-enter and then it will only become more difficult. Do not be ashamed that you have to go to the bathroom, but just be glad that you get something of relief again.

  8. Stress pregnant constipation
