What is reflux in a baby?
Reflux means that the stomach contents of your baby flow back into the esophagus, in other words your baby will spit. The reason that reflux or spitting is common in babies is because the sphincter that has to close the passage of the esophagus to the stomach is not working properly.
Normally, this sphincter must ensure that the stomach contents do not flow back to the esophagus. In young babies, the stomach is not yet fully developed and since babies mainly receive liquid food, this can flow back more easily. Consequence: your baby has to spit and you will soon notice that this is several times a day! Sometimes a baby spits out the whole bottle.
When do we speak of reflux disease?
In the case of harmless reflux your baby will spit several times a day, but your child will not be bothered by it. What your baby spits out does smell a bit sour. In case of hidden reflux or reflux disease (gastro esophageal reflux disease GORZ), reflux does affect the well-being of your child.
Your baby suffers from this disease if he or she does not eat well, grows poorly and / or falls off. In reflux disease, the esophagus is irritated by the backflow of the stomach contents. In this case the esophagus is scarce or even inflamed.
