Tea seems very harmless and healthy. That's why many people are tipping away liters of tea every day. Whether it's the old-fashioned Earl Gray or a fresh mint tea: tea is quite popular nowadays. But did you know that too much tea is not good for you? Especially when you have a small one in the belly. Did you think that at least you were still well fed with herbal tea during your pregnancy? Unfortunately, that is also not true. Sometimes it goes herbal tea and pregnancy not well together and you better leave them alone. Which tea can you drink during pregnancy?

Why do you have to moderate with tea?

The reason why pregnant women have to watch out for tea during their pregnancy is because tea also contains caffeine. Sometimes the caffeine of tea is also called theine. A nice word, but it still remains the same as caffeine. Too much of this substance causes your heart rate to increase and you are more restless.

If you are pregnant, it means that the heart of your child will beat faster and your child is more active. Babies who are more active can develop more difficult. In addition, the use of caffeine in early pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, although this increased risk is very small.

The Nutrition Center advises pregnant women not to consume more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day. A cup of filter coffee is good for 70 milligrams of caffeine per 100 grams and green or black tea accounts for 25 ml per 100 grams. In normal Dutch this means 1 to 2 cups of filter coffee per day (or 1 espresso) and 3 to 4 mugs of black or green tea per day.

There is no caffeine in herbal tea, but before you stop clocks, the food center recommends alternating these teas with other drinks such as water or dairy.

And what about fruit tea? Fruit tea is actually just black tea, but with a nice taste. For this the advice also applies to drink no more than 3 or 4 mugs per day.

Herbal tea and pregnancy

So there is no caffeine in herbal tea. Actually, herbal tea is not a tea either. It is not made of the tea plant, but of an infusion of dried plants and herbs. Therefore, there is no caffeine present, but that does not make every herbal tea suitable for drinking during pregnancy. Herbal tea that you can drink are:

  • Chamomile tea (can help with stomach problems and has a calming effect, so it is a great tea before bedtime).
  • Rooibos tea.
  • Rosehip tea.
  • Ginger tea (can help against morning sickness).
  • Raspberry leaf tea.
  • Nettle tea.
  • Marshmallow root tea.

Forbidden herbs during pregnancy

Not everything that comes from nature is good for your health. Certain herbs or fruits can even poison us. Now that is of course included in the herbs that are processed in tea (otherwise it could not be sold), but there are certain herbs that are not good for pregnant women. The herbal tea that you better not drink during your pregnancy:

  • Licorice tea: max one or two cups a day, this tea increases your blood pressure.
  • Star mix: also increases blood pressure.
  • Anise tea and fennel tea: certain plants contain toxins that are not good for your baby.

Herbal tea and pregnancy do not always go together. Which tea are you allowed to drink?

In addition, there is some herbal tea of ​​which there is no scientific evidence that they can cause damage to your child or the pregnancy, but that many still discourage. These are teas from:

  • Rosemary: stimulates blood flow to the lower body and can therefore be better avoided. Incidentally, it is fine to throw it through your food.
  • Juniper.
  • Peppermint or mint tea: stimulates digestion in such a way that you can get diarrhea and suffer from stomach acid.
  • Aloe vera: has a laxative effect and that does not seem to be good during your pregnancy.
