How much sleep does your baby need?
How much sleep your baby needs depends on the age and on your baby. Some babies need more sleep than others. Usually your baby will indicate when he or she is ready for a nap. The first months this is mainly dependent on hunger. After this, a good sleep rhythm of a baby will play an increasing role. Therefore, ensure a good daily schedule with rest and regularity. Here a small schedule about the amount of sleep that your baby needs:
0 to 6 weeks old:
14 to 18 hours a day. In the first 6 weeks your baby sleeps for only 2 to 3 hours in a row (also at night), your baby is awake for an hour and then sleeps again. Your baby knows no difference between day and night. Try to bring this in by not turning on at low light at night and making little noise.
6 weeks to 3 months old:
After 6 weeks your baby can sleep a little longer than 2 to 3 hours and your baby can sleep longer during the night.
4 to 6 months old:
The number of hours of sleep decreases. Your baby now sleeps 14 to 15 hours a day and has a reasonable night rhythm. Some babies can sleep through for 8 hours. From now on, start with a sleep ritual such as reading a book.
7 to 9 months old:
Your baby sleeps about 14 hours a day. At night some babies can sleep for 9 hours in a row (unfortunately that does not apply to all babies).
10 months to 1 year:
Your baby sleeps less and less during the day and in the evening and at night. In total your child sleeps around 14 hours, between 9 and 10 in the evening.
How much does a baby sleep during the day?
The amount of sleep of your baby during the day is entirely dependent on the age and sleep needs of your child. Below again a small schedule of a sleep rhythm per month:
up to 3 months:
Every two to three hours of sleep, in between an hour awake.
4 to 6 months:
During the day your baby sleeps in total between 3 to 4 hours divided over three to four naps.
7 to 9 months:
During the day your baby will still take two to three naps. In total, these are about 3 sleep hours.
10 months to 1 year:
During the day your baby needs 2 more sleeps from 1 to 2 hours. The sleeping hours will now be between 2.5 and 3 hours.
When your child is 1.5 years old, one afternoon nap of 1.5 to 2 hours is sufficient.
Baby sleeps too much?
The sleeping rhythm of a baby is entirely according to the needs of your baby. It is not often that a baby sleeps too much. So if your baby sleeps more than the aforementioned hours, it is possible that your baby is just a wonderful dreamer.
Pay attention to your baby during the hours that he or she is awake. If your baby is alert and happy, then there is nothing to worry about. When your baby remains lethargic and you feel that your baby is not completely there, then you should contact the doctor.
In newborn babies, there should be no more than 10 hours between the next diet. If your baby is still in dreamland after 10 hours, you can better wake him up to feed.
Build up a baby's good sleep rhythm
It is important to quickly build up a good sleep rhythm of a baby. Here you can start right away. If your baby is younger than 6 weeks, he or she will not know the difference between day and night. Try to create some clarity here by giving the nightly feeds in a dark and quiet room.
When your baby is older than 6 weeks, he or she will develop an evening rhythm and sleep through a bit more quickly. During the day your baby will sleep about 3 hours in 3 to 4 sleeping hours. Try to gradually build in a good schedule and opt for fixed sleep moments. Start with a sleep ritual so you can feel the day and your baby knows it's time to sleep.
